Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the most widely used herbs in Ayurveda. Its root has been used for centuries, and it is classed as a rasayana — an herb traditionally used to support strength and overall wellbeing.
Where the name comes from
In Sanskrit, ashwagandha roughly means “smell of a horse”. The name refers to the root’s earthy smell and to the strength and vigour traditionally linked with the herb.
How it is traditionally used
In Ayurvedic practice, Ashwagandha is often combined with other herbs and taken daily over a period of weeks or months. It is traditionally used to support:
- Energy and stamina in daily life
- A calm mind and restful sleep
- Strength as part of an active routine
Getting the most from your routine
No herb works on its own. Ayurveda puts equal weight on dinacharya (daily routine): regular sleep, home-cooked food, movement and managing stress. Take your Ashwagandha-based formula, such as Kapimuni Revive, at the same time each day and give it time.
Things to keep in mind
Ashwagandha may not suit everyone. If you have a thyroid condition, take regular medication, or have any other health condition, speak to a qualified doctor first.
